17MY Pajero Sport - Under the Metal

March 9, 2017

The new 2017 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is the most technically advanced off-roader to be produced by Mitsubishi Motors. Join Barry Du Bois as he explores the new vehicle.

The Pajero Sport is available in Mitsubishi’s three tier trim levels, the GLX, GLS and the range topping Exceed.

The masculine front end with the Mitsubishi ‘dynamic shield’ styling matches the sweeping window line, and finally finishes with the distinctive rear lights that use Dynamic LED rear combination lamps. The new aerodynamic front end even reduces splash on the windscreen when going through water.

The Pajero Sport features an impressive 218mm of ground clearance. For easy access to the cabin, all models come standard with sidesteps. The wheels are 18in in diameter, and slick LED Daylight Running lamps, headlights and fog lamps complete the Pajero Sport’s handsome exterior.

Mitsubishi’s wide range of genuine accessories is also available to personalise the Pajero Sport. Starting with the Frontal Protection range, it also has interior/exterior protection accessories, the popular towing pack, and also a lifestyle accessories range. All Mitsubishi genuine accessories are designed, engineered and manufactured to ensure a perfect fit and optimal performance.

Powering the Pajero Sport is a 2.4-litre MIVEC turbo-diesel engine, which produces 133kw and 430Nm. The lightweight diesel engine delivers punchy power throughout the low-to-mid rpm range for day-to-day use. The bespoke eight-speed automatic transmission has a wide gear range, but with close gear ratios, resulting in responsive acceleration while returning low fuel consumption. It’s also a fantastic companion for those who do a lot of towing!

Speaking of towing, the Pajero Sport is rated for 3.1 tonnes, which is massive for a SUV of this size. The eight speed auto ensures that it is in the right gear at any speed, for the smoothest ride possible for the occupants and cargo. Stop-start traffic isn’t a problem; when the Pajero Sport is in gear while stationary, the neutral idle helps to reduce transmission drag for better fuel efficiency. The sporty paddle shifters allow the driver to change gears without taking hands off the steering.

Out on the road, the Pajero Sport’s manners are impeccable. The three-link coil suspension in the rear is tough enough for any off-road adventures, yet absorbs any road lumps and bumps without stress. The steering is well balanced, and the ride comfortable while firm in the corners for extra body control. NVH levels inside the cabin at both city and highway speeds are exceptional, adding to the Pajero Sports smooth ride. For a car of its size, the Pajero Sport has a turning circle of just 5.6 metres, making it easy to manoeuvre around the city and parking lots.

The cabin of the Pajero Sport is an impressively comfortable place to be, whether off or on the road. Thousands of hours were spent honing the ergonomics, ensuring the occupants are comfortable before the key is turned.

Hopping into the driver’s seat is second nature, with a commanding position behind the steering wheel, and great visibility in every direction. The cabin is spacious, with lots of headroom front and rear. The rear passengers won’t want for space, with an impressive amount of legroom to stretch their legs. The second row of seats can be folded down for extra storage space. In the case of GLS and Exceed models, the additional third row of seats can be folded flat into the floor. There is even a cargo box fitted under the floor behind the extra seats for extra storage. Each rear passenger row is equipped with their own roof-mounted air vents for cooling or heating.

Keeping the front passenger and driver entertained is the 7in touch-screen entertainment unit. With the Smartphone Display Audio (SDA) compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay technology across the range, music, maps, messages or calls can be accessed while driving without taking your eyes off the road. Clear audio are played via an eight-speaker sound system for the Exceed model for tuneful entertainment.

Awarded with a 5-star ANCAP safety rating, the Pajero Sport is brimming with the latest safety technology. Built with Mitsubishi’s trusted Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution body design, the Pajero Sport also includes seven SRS airbags, which includes dual front, side curtain and driver’s knee. Seven seat models receive curtain airbags that extend up to the third row, protecting all occupants.

The Pajero Sport is well equipped to deal with any challenge, on or off road. Thanks to Mitsubishi’s Super Select II, the Pajero Sport can operate in different 2WD and 4WD modes. It even has an OFFROADMODE that enhances traction on demanding surfaces.

Rough tracks and tough terrain is easily traversed thanks to impressive wheel articulation, and all round clearance. With a 30 degree approach and 24 degree departure angle, as well as a 23 degree break over angle, going off the road does not faze the Pajero Sport. The Pajero Sport also has a rated 700mm wading depth, meaning crossing streams and shallow rivers is a walk in the park.

Using the drive mode selector dial, it is easy between 2WD and 4WD on the fly, with speeds up to 100km/h. If required, the centre differential can be locked for more traction by turning the knob to 4HLc setting for rugged terrain, or 4LLc for inclines, snow, mud and sand.

To unlock even more traction, the Pajero Sport can enter into GRAVEL, MUD/SNOW, SAND or ROCK settings via the OFFROADEMODE selector. Engine output, transmission settings, and braking is then automatically adjusted to optimize the Pajero Sport’s performance on the selected surfaces. For serious off roaders, the GLS and Exceed models comes standard with a rear differential lock feature.

Going downhill? The Hill Descent Control can be activated, automatically applying the brakes to maintain the current speed while traveling downhill up to 20km/h. This allows the driver to concentrate on steering and navigating obstacles without having to manually apply the brakes.

The Pajero Sport comes with the industry leading Mitsubishi Diamond Advantage, which consists of a five-year/100,000km new car warranty, capped price servicing, and roadside assistance.

The Pajero Sport is fantastic for active families and four-wheel drive enthusiasts, containing everything required for genuine four-wheel drive ability and class leading safety. All this is wrapped up in a stylish, nimble and comfortable design.
